FAQ about Direct Support Professional Positions at Friendship Community
What is a “Direct Support Professional?”
Direct Support Professionals provide care in a home setting to adults who have developmental disabilities. Their tasks include assisting Individuals with their personal hygiene, transporting to and from activities, light housekeeping, and preparing meals. In some homes, you may be expected to lift or transfer individuals who are non-ambulatory. The job description of Direct Support Professionals, titled Advisor 1, 2, or 3, is similar to that of a Nurse’s Aide. All Team Members must be able to successfully complete medication administration certification within their first few months of employment.
What sort of experience do I need to be an Advisor 1, 2, or 3?
The greatest trait any Direct Support Professional Advisor needs is a heart to serve others. However, any experience in career fields such as: the medical, psychology or mental health/developmental disabilities field is a plus. Those who have worked in retirement homes, home health care, or other group homes will be very familiar with the tasks of a Direct Support Professional Advisor. Friendship Community also considers personal experience of applicants, such as providing care to an ill or disabled loved one, volunteer experience at clubs, camps, or other programs, and even a strong interest in the field of Developmental Disabilities. All applicants need to feel comfortable working in a team environment.
Advisor 1 is the entry-level position at Friendship Community. Advisor 2’s and 3’s need to have some experience working as a Direct Support Professional. Additionally, Advisor 3’s need administrative and organization skills. Advisor 3 positions are often filled internally by Team Members that already work at Friendship Community because they are familiar with the protocols and regulations. Advisor 3’s have more responsibilities than Advisor 1’s and 2’s and are a support to the Program Supervisor.
I’m not comfortable providing personal care to both genders. Will I need to care for males and females?
Possibly. Most of our homes are mixed gender homes, meaning that you may be expected to provide personal care to either males or females. We do have a few homes that are exclusively female or male because of special needs or concerns. If you are not comfortable providing personal care to both genders, please be aware that your preference may limit job opportunities for you within Friendship Community.
Do I need to have a Driver’s License to work at Friendship Community?
Yes. All applicants must have a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License with a minimum of six months driving experience. Driver’s Licenses are required, as you will be expected to transport the Individuals you work with during shifts.
Where is Friendship Community located?
Our corporate office is located along Route 722 at 1149 East Oregon Road, in Lititz, PA.
Friendship Community has more than 25 group homes in Lancaster County and 2 homes in Lebanon County. Our homes are located in Akron, East Petersburg, Ephrata, Lancaster City, Lebanon, Leola , Lititz, Manheim, Millersville and New Holland.
Do I need a High School Diploma/GED or special training?
No. On-the-job training is provided for Advisor 1 and 2 roles. We prefer that Advisor 3’s have previous Direct Support Professional experience. A High School Diploma or GED is preferred, but not required. However, if you are selected for an initial interview, you will be required to complete a Pre-Interview Assessment at our corporate office. You must score well enough on the pre-interview assessment to continue with the interview process.
Are Medical Benefits Offered?
Yes, for full-time positions. Full-time Team Members are provided with medical benefits, paid-time-off and a dental and vision reimbursement plan. Full-time is defined as 36+ hours per week, and those intentionally hired to fill a full-time opening.
Max part-time Team Members work 20 to 35 hours per week and receive some paid time off. Part-time team members work less than 20 hours per week.
What are the hours for the Direct Support Professional Advisor positions?
All Full-time and Max Part-time positions include weekday shifts, and could include split shifts, such as 6am to 9am and 2 pm to 10 pm. Full-time and max part-time Team Members also work every other weekend, generally 7-3 or 3-11. Part-time positions generally do not include weekday hours. What background checks are required?
Friendship Community completes driver checks that include a ten-year driving history. Criminal history checks are completed and must comply with the Act 13 of 1997 Criminal Offenses list. Applicants must disclose moving violations and criminal history on their application.
